Today, Microsoft have changed their logo for the first time in 25 years. Announced on the Microsoft Blog earlier, the new branding is minimalistic, with an emphasis on the whole “tiles” aspect of all Microsoft’s products.

This is a radical change for Microsoft, and reflects the huge changes the company has been making as a whole in the last 2 years. Microsoft appear to be unifying their whole ecosystem, and boiling down all of their products, into one standard interface. Jeff Hansen, General Manager of Brand Strategy at Microsoft, explains that “The logo has two components: the logotype and the symbol. For the logotype, we are using the Segoe font which is the same font we use in our products as well as our marketing communications. The symbol is important in a world of digital motion (as demonstrated in the video above.) The symbol’s squares of color are intended to express the company’s diverse portfolio of products.”
Microsoft will be updating all their current products and services to feature the new logo from today. What are your thoughts on the changes in branding, and the new direction Microsoft are heading in?
