What Browser is right for you?

Today I am going to be talking to you about which web browser you should be using and why. Bare in mind I am not going to be going through every single web browser on the market just a few of the most used browsers.

Google Chrome:

A web browser by one of the most used websites, Google. This is advertised on the Google homepage and on you tube a lot . A very popular browser. Google Chrome is currently my web browser of choice and has been for for a couple of years and here is why.

Reasons to use:

Google Chrome has one of the most friendly UI’s that I have seen so far. Its simplistic layout is effective and clean. You can see what you want and the browser maximizes screen space. There are numerous extensions for the browser that I can recommend such as Tweet Deck, Web of Trust & Site to Phone. There are also a large selection of themes to choose from that can change your browsers feel depending on your personality. Even the default Chrome themes are  choice enough for me, including popular singers and famous figures, as well as plain block colours.

Pros:

  • You can sync bookmarks & history to your other devices such as an Android phone or a Laptop with your Google Account
  • Numerous plugins to change your browsers use
  • Clean layout that maximises the amount of the screen used for the web page

Cons:

  • The browser through its many versions has progressively become a RAM hogger so to speak
  • There are a limited number of extensions compared to Firefox, however extensive it may be

Internet Explorer:

Internet Explorer was one of the lowest specs and highly over rater and over used browsers. I agree with the fact that its only use is to install other browsers. However, over time internet explorer has slowly improved and caught up with some of the common features of modern day browsers. It still does not have themes or extensions, but does have a couple of exclusive games that Microsoft have obviously paid a lot of money for as they would not use internet explorer by choice. These games being, Angry Birds Space & Cut the Rope.

Reasons to use:

To play Angry birds and to install other browsers when you reset or get a new computer.

Pros:

  • It is rather user friendly
  • It is quite a lightweight browser

Cons:

  • Almost no plugins or extentions can be added to it
  • The theme of the browser cannot be changed
  • It is rather slow and prone to crashing

Safari:

Safari is a clean modern browser designed for the Mac operating system. I personally would not recomended using this browser on a PC for the style and the way the browser works is not as compatible. That said, it is a very clean browser.

Reasons to use:

If you are on a mac, this is the perfect browser for the theme and mechanics of the browser were desgisned for Apple Computers. However, using the browser on other operating systems can make it look rather out of place, and the way it works changes for the worse.

Pros:

  • It fits in with the Apple operating system
  • It looks rather sexy

Cons:

  • No themes and limited extensions
  • Buggy on operating systems other than OSX

Mozilla Firefox:

Firefox is a very old browser that has always had the majority of the internet browsing market. I used it myself for a few years and enjoyed all of it. It is the most used browser today and most of the Geekily staff use it as seen at the end of the post.

Reasons to use:

It has thousands of themes and extentions that have been developed for years. The browser has numerous customization options that give the user the ability to tweak the browser to their custom design.

Pros:

  • The browser has limitless extensions to improve the browsers functionality
  • There are also numerous themes for the browser that can change the whole user experience

Cons:

  • It doesn’t work as well on the OSX operating system
  • It is also a rather heavy browser

Opera:

This is a less popular choice but still a contender for the top browser. It has a nice layout and also has Android and iOS versions. I personally only use the browser for my Android phone, but the desktop version is still popular.

Reasons to use:

It is on multiple devices so get used to it then using it on other devices is easy because Opera have tried their best to keep the layouts similar. It is not too hard to learn the layout and all the features and generally looks nice. It has a variety of themes and extensions to choose from, most of the themes being very simplistic and the extensions being rather minor tweaks to the browser.

Pros:

  • The layout is very simple to pick up
  • The browser is on Android and most non smart phones as well as the PC
  • It is clean, lightweight and simplistic

Cons:

  • The extensions and themes are limited
  • Sometimes logs you out of websites while the tabs are still open

Personally I like switch between browsers. WIth Google Chrome, I’ve been having issues with the audio on YouTube videos which is why I use Firefox.

My main issue with Firefox is the some of the decent addons don’t work with the latest version, and sadly these extensions never see an update.

I personally like Chrome (without addons) since it’s the lighest of all browsers and can play Angry Birds (both the chrome and facebook versions) without slowing down my PC.
